Week of Full Service and What We Eat

Every once in a while I read an article in the Deseret News that I want to share.  Today there are two of them.  You can click on the highlighted area and that will link you to the article.

The first article is about a LDS youth group in the North Ogden who instead of going to camp or youth conferences this summer they spent the money and time on an extreme makeover for a neighborhood family home.  As I was reading it, I was thinking of Jordan and what he would get out of a project like that.  He would gain skills and knowledge of home repair and construction and he would experience the joy of service.  So I thought the article was worth mentioning.  Our youth do service,  but it usually consists of half a day... but to commit a whole week to service...Wow!

The second article is specifically written to the LDS audience and is in the "Mormon Times" section of the paper.  As LDS we have a code of health we follow called the Word of Wisdom.   As the author addresses we diligently follow the no "strong drink" or tobacco, but fail to follow the rest as pertaining to the healthy things we should be eating.  She also mentions that chips, soda, and ice cream are a major food group in the LDS culture.   We all have to chuckle at that! I have a cub master who wants our boys not to expect  sugary "refreshments" after pack meeting.  He has us serve fruits and vegetables.  We do that, but we also revert to the standbys every so often.  For our Arrow of Light we had root beer floats-- we hit two of the LDS major food groups-- root beer and ice cream!  She also writes about food traditions we have, like pizza and soda go together.  Dessert after dinner.  Sweets at Christmas. (refreshments at church activities would be a food tradition)   But she says the best tradition we can give our kids is healthy eating, not the tradition of obesity, type II diabetes, and heart disease.   Great food for thought, give it a read,  it is called Using Wisdom in How We Eat.
