Chance had a field trip to the Lawrence Hall of Science at Berkeley and I was one of the chaperones and drivers. They had free time in the museum and then attended two classes, "Gone Crayfishing" and "Pop goes the acid"
Chance was totally in his element testing different acids and measuring which one made the most amount of gas. Fishing for crayfish was a new experience for me and Chance. The class learned about pond creatures and who eats who- the food web. We then went to the outside pond and crayfished. They used sticks with a string they would slowly unwind into the water. At the end of the string was anchovy or squid bait. They would count to 30 and then slowly wind the stick back up. If they were lucky, they had a crayfish hanging from the end. Chance did not catch one, but the class did get 10 all together. It was much quicker then fishing-- however, if Chance had a hook at the end of his string he would of caught a few large goldfish that would not stop nibbling his anchovy on a string.
So what is a crayfish? Cousin to a lobster, lives in fresh water, and is a lot of work to eat-- considering how much meat you get. We did not eat them- they went back into the water so the next class could go crayfishing!
